Radial Scar Versus Tubular Carcinoma of the Breast
1995
Summary The present study is focused on the differential diagnosis between radial scar (RS) and tubular carcinoma (TC) using morphometrical and cytophotometrical analysis (static and flow cytometry) of a number of histologically well-established RS cases, (17 lesions) compared with 6 early infiltrating small TC with sclerotic stroma and pseudo-RS fields. One case displayed both RS and TC foci in contiguity. Mean nuclear area was larger in the group of tubular carcinomas (51.0 μ 2 ) than in the cases o f radial sclerosis (38.30 μ 2 ). We also found a larger number of aneuploid cases in tubular carcinomas measured by image cytometry, but both types o f lesions were diploid when measured by fl…
Ultrastructural pathology of dermal axons and Schwann cells in lysosomal diseases
1988
Skin tissue specimens, obtained from 60 patients afflicted with a diverse range of lysosomal disorders revealed two groups of lesions within dermal axons, largely unmyelinated ones, particularly within axonal terminals: (1) non-specific mitochondria and dense bodies often enlarging the axonal terminal; and (2) disease-specific lysosomal residual bodies, the latter less frequent depending on the incidence and type of lysosomal disorders, i.e., largely only seen in GM2-gangliosidosis due to hexosaminidase A deficiency and mucolipidosis IV, while the spectrum of lysosomal residual bodies in Schwann cells appeared more variegated, especially due to the occurrence of vacuolar lysosomal residual …
C-myc mRNA Expression in Epithelial Ovarian Carcinomas in Relation to Estrogen Receptor Status, Metastatic Spread, Survival Time, FIGO Stage, and His…
1998
Recently, it has been suggested that c-myc expression might correlate with estrogen receptor (ER) status and metastatic spread in ovarian cancer. In this study, expression of c-myc mRNA in 90 epithelial ovarian carcinomas was determined using the S1 nuclease protection assay. Expression of c-myc mRNA was detectable in 27 of 90 tumors. There was no significant association between c-myc mRNA expression and metastatic spread, survival time, FIGO stage, or histologic grade and type. C-myc mRNA was expressed in 45% of ER-positive tumors but only 24% of ER-negative tumors (p = 0.094; Fisher's exact test). Similarly, 44% of progesterone receptor (PR)-positive and 23% of PR-negative tumors expresse…
Transfer of the active form of transforming growth factor-beta 1 gene to newborn rat lung induces changes consistent with bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
2003
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia is a chronic lung disease of premature human infancy that shows pathological features comprising varying sized areas of interstitial fibrosis in association with distorted large alveolar spaces. We have previously shown that transfer of active transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta 1 (AdTGF beta 1(223/225)) genes by adenovirus vector to embryonic lungs results in inhibition of branching morphogenesis and primitive peripheral lung development, whereas transfer to adult lungs results in progressive interstitial fibrosis. Herein we show that transfer of TGF-beta1 to newborn rat pups results in patchy areas of interstitial fibrosis developing throughout a period of 28 …

Comparative histological, histochemical, immunohistochemical and biochemical studies on oestrogen receptors, lectin receptors, and Barr bodies in hum…
1986
The present study performed on a total of 567 cases of human female breast cancer compares the results of the biochemical assay (dextran-coated charcoal assay = DCC) for oestrogen receptor (ER) with those of several morphological methods developed for the detection of the ER or for the prediction of prognosis by use of other systems (FSA = fluorescent ligand binding assay, ER-ICA = monoclonal antibody assay for ER, LRA = lectin receptor assay using peanut agglutinin, and Barr body estimation). Whereas no correlation at all was observed among the results of the DCC and those of the FSA and Barr body estimation, the ER-ICA and the LRA showed an unanimous tendency towards higher values of ER w…
Retrospective Study of Patients Diagnosed With Sweet Syndrome in the Health Area of a Tertiary Hospital in the Autonomous Community of Valencia
2012
Sweet syndrome is the most characteristic of the neutrophilic dermatoses. We performed a retrospective study of patients with Sweet syndrome seen in our department between 2001 and 2009, inclusive; the aims were to define the patient profile and to evaluate the clinical and epidemiological differences between subgroups. There were 24 patients (13 women and 11 men). The age distribution was similar in both sexes and showed 2 peaks, one in the fourth decade and the other in the eighth decade. The etiology was predominantly infectious or inflammatory, followed by the idiopathic form. There were 4 cases of paraneoplastic disease, 2 of which involved solid-organ tumors. One case was associated w…
Bilateral agenesis/aplasia of the lungs: report of a second case in the offspring of one woman.
1995
Congenital absence of both lungs is an extremely rare malformation in humans and is thought to occur sporadically. We report the second case of congenital absence of both lungs in the offspring of one woman. In neither case, one female baby (born at term) and one aborted female fetus (21 weeks of gestation), were anomalies or malformations of other organ systems observed. The karyotype of the aborted fetus was 46,XX. To our knowledge, this is the first report describing bilateral pulmonary agenesis in two offspring of one mother. The repetition of virtually the same isolated abnormality with no other malformations supports the hypothesis that it could be caused by a genetic disorder. Other …
Otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis in children: proposal of an experience-based treatment flowchart
2018
Purpose: To describe the prevalent clinical, laboratory, and radiological features of otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis (OLST) in children; to identify clinical predictors of outcome; to propose a management algorithm derived from experience. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of the clinical records of patients with OLST, treated in a single tertiary care referral center for pediatric disease from 2006 to 2017. The inclusion criteria were pediatric age (0–16 years) and OLST diagnosis confirmed by a pre- and post-contrast CT or venography–MRI scan. Primary outcome measures were early (1–2 months) and late (6 months) sinus recanalization assessed by means of neuroimaging. Results:…
Quantitative measurements of magnetic stray field dynamics of Permalloy particles in a photoemission electron microscopy
2010
By example of a Permalloy particle (40 × 40 μm(2) size, 30 nm thickness) we demonstrate a procedure to quantitatively investigate the dynamics of magnetic stray fields during ultrafast magnetization reversal. The measurements have been performed in a time-resolving photoemission electron microscope using the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. In the particle under investigation, we have observed a flux-closure-dominated magnetic ground structure, minimizing the magnetic stray field outside the sample. A fast magnetic field pulse introduced changes in the micromagnetic structure accompanied with an incomplete flux closure. As a result, stray fields arise along the edges of domains, which cau…
